Leasing a car: What you need to know

If you've never leased a vehicle before, then this can be a daunting experience for some people and here we explain more about what you need to know when leasing a car.

There's lots of information available online but here, the Tilsun Leasing team offer a simple guide to leasing a car.

Suitable car lease deal

It may sound like obvious advice but finding a suitable car leasing deal that is right for you is crucial.

Not only do you need to decide what you want to lease, but you also need to decide how long you want to lease a car.

Here are some important car leasing tips to follow:

  • Do you know what your budget is? If not, decide how much you can afford as the monthly payment
  • Do you know how much you would like to pay upfront? This is the 'initial rental' and will vary - with Tilsun Leasing it's either one, three, six or nine times the monthly payment. This is an effective way to reduce your monthly bill.
  • What type of body style of lease car do you want? There's no point opting for an SUV or an estate car, if a small, city car will suffice.
  • Do you want a car with a manual or automatic gearbox? Some people only have a driving licence for cars with an automatic transmission - most cars are available with both types of transmission.
  • Is there a particular fuel type you want? Electric cars, or EVs, are growing in popularity, as are hybrids which is a car with both a petrol engine and an electric motor.

Once you have these answers, then it's time to start looking at the car leasing deals to find the car that best meets your needs.

The car leasing process

The next step is to visit the Tilsun Leasing car deals page, click on the manufacturers you are interested in, and the cars they have.

You need to be aware that you will need to pass a credit check and there will be some documentation necessary too before you will be accepted by a car leasing company.

The credit check is to ensure that you can meet the monthly payments and for a personal car leasing deal, you'll need proof of address, photographic ID, bank details and employment details.

Do I need a car lease maintenance package?

Another important question before leasing a brand-new car is whether you want a maintenance package.

This will bring peace of mind motoring when you lease a car and will take care of:

  • Maintenance
  • Servicing
  • Replacement of some items, including the tyres and exhaust system.

It's also worth noting that there are fair wear and tear guidelines in place, so you need to have serious damage repaired - or have the car leasing firm send you a bill for carrying out those repairs.

Do I need car lease insurance?

Don't forget that you will need to insure your leased car, and you'll need to have comprehensive insurance when you do so.

This means you will be covered should your leased car be stolen or written off in an accident.

You simply need to tell the car insurance firm that you are leasing the car so they know who to pay should anything happen.

Check your car leasing deal

The final step is to check through the car leasing agreement so that it is for the correct contract length, the right annual mileage limit and the initial rental, plus the monthly payment has been detailed.

The final contract will also detail any extra costs such as the maintenance package, and it will also give the delivery date and where the brand-new car will be delivered.

Finally, once everything is signed your brand-new lease car will be on its way to you and you can then drive it until the contract ends and then decide whether you want a brand-new lease car or take up another option.
